Even if, as the chairman of the Spiel des Jahres association, Harald Schrapers<\/a>, emphasised in his speech, everything will be different in 2020: \u201cWe have decided not to skip this award ceremony. Because we owe it to the cultural asset of the game. Nevertheless, this year\u2019s award ceremony took place on a smaller scale than usual. Instead, numerous authors of the nominated games from Brazil, Italy, the Netherlands and Germany participated via video conference. \u201cOnce again, the wide range of games was impressive,\u201d said Schrapers. A special tribute was paid to the game author Klaus Teuber, whose classic game \u201cThe Settlers of Catan\u201d celebrates its 25th anniversary this year, with a very emotional video clip by jury member Julia Zerlik<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In 2020, the Kennerspiel des Jahres was awarded for the 10th time, and the Spiel des Jahres for the 42nd time. Jury member Manuel Fritsch<\/a>, who represented the speaker Bernhard L\u00f6hlein, led through the event. He said that the Spiel des Jahres critics\u2019 award is just as old as he is: \u201cI grew up with the red pawn,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Communicative trick-tacking game in space: \u201cDie Crew\u201d<\/h2>\n

At the event, which took place in the nhow Conference Center beside the Spree in Berlin, \u201cDie Crew<\/a>\u201d (\u201cThe Crew\u201d, published by Kosmos) by game designer Thomas Sing was awarded the title of Kennerspiel des Jahres 2020. The central game mechanism is that of a trick-tacking game\u2013but it is intended as a cooperative game in which communication is restricted. \u201cFor me, communication is the heart of the game,\u201d says Sing. The space theme of \u201cDie Crew\u201d has a real inspiration: \u201cThe game was created when everyone was talking about ISS Commander Alexander Gerst,\u201d says the author. In the jury\u2019s statement, it says: \u201cHardly any other game before was able to capture the special charm of trick games so well.\u201d<\/p>\n

Creative with unusual materials: \u201cPictures\u201d<\/h2>\n

The Spiel des Jahres 2020 won \u201cPictures<\/a>\u201d (published by PD-Verlag) by the author couple Daniela and Christian St\u00f6hr. The creative party game is about reconstructing photos from unusual materials such as shoelaces, building blocks, sticks and stones. \u201cIt was clear to us,\u201d says Daniela St\u00f6hr, \u201cthat the five materials would fit together perfectly.\u201d In the jury\u2019s statement, it says: \u201cEach set challenges the players in a different way, and so the incentive to experiment is enormous.\u201c<\/p>\n
